MILLWALL Lions Rugby Club are gearing up for the new season – with more teams than ever.
The Isle of Dogs club will have four boys teams at U14, U15, U16 and U17 this season as well as a girls’ team. And for the first time some of the players will get a taste of competitive action.
All the teams will play friendlies, but this time around, the U17s and the U15s boys team will compete in the Essex cup.
The U15 team are a completely new side whereas the U17s played together last season.
Youth chairman Matt Shorrock is expecting steady rather than spectacular progress.
But he hopes the season will help the club on its way to putting out teams in all age groups in the future.
“Consolidation, stabilisation of all age groups and to have the right amount of numbers for all the teams are our aims for the season,” he told East End Life.
Shorrock grew up in Australia playing rugby league. He came to Britain in 2001 and moved to the Isle of Dogs where his interest turned to rugby union. He has been with Millwall Rugby Club ever since.
And their chances of winning anything? Shorrock: said: “The U17s were doing well at the end of last season beating teams by fifty points and so have the potential to do well in the cup.”
