A TEAM of young footballers from Bow Boys School tasted glory at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium last week when they were crowned champions of a community tournament.
The Bow team were part of a tournament involving 100 local youngsters, aged between 12 and 14, who are involved in the club’s sport and education initiative – the Arsenal Double Club.
The players were selected as recognition of their achievements throughout the school year on an initiative that aims to improve numeracy and literacy skills with football-focussed lessons taken by an Arsenal teacher.
Keeping on eye on the players’ balls skills on the day were former Arsenal legends Bob Wilson, Ray Parlour and Martin Keown.
Evandro Monteiro, a year 7 student from Bow, summed up the day: “I loved playing on the Emirates pitch, it was the happiest moment of my life and we won the competition.”
Neil Atherton, Arsenal Double Club teacher at Bow Boys, said the players had done themselves proud.
“Giving the boys a chance to play at Emirates Stadium is something they won’t forget,” he said.
“To win the tournament is the icing on the cake for the boys; they’ve done themselves and the school very proud indeed.
“Most importantly today puts the Arsenal Double Club into context for them and hopefully gives them the motivation to keep working hard.”
