In the market for lunch

WANDERING the borough’s markets is a great way to spend your Sunday. I decided to take advantage of the unusually good weather and headed off to Spitalfields to do a bit of shopping and have lunch.
The market does get very busy but luckily shoppers are spoilt for choice with trendy eateries surrounding the stalls.
My friend and I decided to try out Giraffe after scanning their menu on our way past. We had to wait ten minutes for a table as it was heaving. We chose to be seated outside, as there was more space to move.
The waitress was very cheerful, apologising for the wait as she handed us the menus.
And there was a bit of everything from smoked salmon and scrambled eggs bagel stack to Japanese crisp fried tiger prawns and sunshine power food salad to tangy and spiced turkey enchiladas.
Being quite hungry I went for the veggie brunch, which consisted of roasted mushrooms, veggie sausages, baked beans, potato wedges, toast and free range scrambled eggs with a glass of pomegranate juice.
My friend chose a falafel deluxe burger made up of grilled peppers, hummus, beetroot, rocket, halloumi, tzatziki (a Greek style yoghurt sauce) and harissa (a spicy sauce) and a bowl of skinny fries with a glass of cranberry juice.
Even though the restaurant was busy, we didn’t have to wait long for our food. I couldn’t wait to tuck in. The mushrooms were delicious and they didn’t skimp on the scrambled eggs.
My only criticism was the fact that the veggie sausages were not actually veggie sausages but two falafel balls. Maybe there was a mix up in the kitchen. Nonetheless, even though I didn’t order the falafels they tasted good, if a little unusual in a veggie breakfast.
My friend, who did order a falafel burger, did get what she asked for, and wolfed it down and picked at her chips. The food was plentiful, filling and good value with meal and drinks coming to £21.54.
Giraffe also boasts a tasty dessert menu offering a Swiss mountain chocolate cheesecake, warm pecan, walnut and cranberry pie, and apple, rhubarb and ginger crumble. But we were too stuffed to indulge.
Giraffe is at Unit 1, Crispin Place, Spitalfields, E1.
