Fish with everything doesn't come cheap

If you have a penchant for fresh fish and seafood, the Curve Restaurant & Bar should be high on your lists of “must do” restaurants.

Nestling within the curving (hence the name) five star Marriott West India Quay, the restaurant is the perfect location to enjoy the finest fish, courtesy of nearby Billingsgate Market.

Once inside the restaurant, my friend and I had great views overlooking Docklands and Canary Wharf. The atmosphere was very relaxed and, apart from us, there was only one other group of diners there.

After a quick scan of the lunchtime menu I chose Icelandic wild haddock and chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce. The reason behind my cautious choice was that in my experience hotel restaurant portions tend to be on the small side and even after a starter and main course you can be hungry for more.

My friend opted for steamed wild Cornish John Dory in soy and ginger sauce, snow peas and water chestnuts.

While we waited we ordered drinks and watched the chef prepare dishes.

I was surprised when my food arrived, as the portions were big. I had a huge piece of fish accompanied with plentiful chips.

However the mushy peas were served in a miniscule dish, which I initially mistook for some kind of mint sauce. As it is an upmarket restaurant you do have to ask for tomato sauce, much to the horror of the waiters.

The steamed John Dory was presented beautifully wrapped in leaves and decorated with water chestnuts.

We both tucked in and my wild haddock got top marks. The John Dory was strongly flavoured but a little too salty.

It took me a while to plough through my dish and once finished I was in need of a sugar rush.

The dessert menu was very tempting and I plumped for the Vahlrona Grand Cru plate.

This consisted of honeycomb mousse, warm chocolate cake and white chocolate cappuccino ice cream.

The cake was mouth-wateringly delicious, served with the ice cream. The mousse was very rich, ideal for chocoholics.

The bill came to £45 and service charge including drinks, a bit pricey for two meals including one fairly traditional fish and chip dish.
