Perfect place to munch during the credit crunch

INCREASING food prices, rising fuel bills and a static housing market have created the so-called credit crunch, which has dominated headlines for the past few months.

However, with a bit of creative thinking and determination, there can be a temporary means of escape.

Even celebrity chefs are dishing out advice about how to feed your family for a fiver.
And in a bid to be a more frugal family, the Peckish clan headed for “eat as much as you like” restaurant Wing’s in Poplar.

The sparsely decorated venue offers more than 50 dishes for diners to choose from and, although it can be a bit rough at the edges at times, offers extremely good value for money.

Having skipped lunch, we arrived in the early evening, determined to eat until we could stomach no more.

The restaurant was busy and noisy, especially with groups of like-minded families who had turned up to dine.

We were quickly ushered to a free table at the back of the room where we had to squeeze past high chairs and pushchairs to our seats.

The spread included popular fare such as pancake roll, crispy duck, chicken wings, mini spring rolls, and chicken satay with a peanut sauce dip.

There were no austere measures here as the menu included a wide variety of seafood, meat, curries and sauces, rice, noodles and vegetables.

The food tasted very nice and the staff were competent in keeping the serving area tidy and topped up with fresh, piping hot fare.

Our favourites included a dish of prawns, squid and broccoli; the spicy chicken and cashew nut sauce which contained equal portions of succulent, boneless chicken and crunchy nuts; as well as the fiery pork in black bean sauce.

A dessert area served fresh fruit and toffee-coated apples and bananas.
We complemented our meal with fruit juice, although Wing’s also serves beer, wine and other soft drinks.

At £10.95 per person, for a Saturday evening out, we were content with our cheap and cheerful, money-saving venture.

However, if you are looking for an intimate, more exclusive experience Wing’s is not the best place to go.

Wing’s is at 6-8 East India Dock Road, Poplar. Tel: 7093 3888.
