Pupils from Smithy Street School were amongst 38 schools taking part in a debate competition. Teams from schools in Newham, Islington and Tower Hamlets all participated in the heats in April 2008.
The final was held at the Professional Development Centre in English Street Mile End. 12 teams went head to head with Smithy emerging victorious, courtesy of a coin toss, after the final with Old Ford (also from Tower Hamlets) had ended in a stalemate.
Smithy were awarded certificates and two trophies. “I am so happy to win, the team worked hard in the face of stiff competition”, a jubilant Nayim Ahmed from Smithy said. “We stuck to our plan and the hard work paid off. It was a great team effort and we are happy to put Smithy School on the map.”
