TOWER Hamlets hosted the London Youth Games disabled athletics final on Thursday, June 19.

Mile End Park Stadium saw hundreds of athletes battle it out in track and field events.

Team Tower Hamlets competed against teams from across London and their team of Mike Schaar, Joel Evans, Kirsty Howard and Terri Monford won the 4 x 100 relay for severe learning disabilities.

The borough’s Kenny Mukandi also won the male 200m for visually impaired athletes and Hasfa Begum won the female 200m for physically impaired athletes.

Students from Morpeth, St Paul’s Way and George Green’s schools took part with the girls team coming fourth overall and the boys in fifth place.

Lead councillor for culture Rofique U Ahmed was at the stadium to cheer on Team Tower Hamlets.

He said: “This is a fantastic event with a great atmosphere. The athletes put their all into the competition and this is the spirit we want to see as Tower Hamlets, one of the five Olympic boroughs, moves towards London 2012.

“Whether they came away with a haul of medals, tried out a new event or joined in and had fun, they all have something to be really proud of.”

This is the fourth consecutive year Mile End Park Stadium has hosted the event, highlighting the quality of sporting facilities within the borough.
