GEORGE Green’s girls footballers have returned from a dream trip to Spain where they met some of the world’s top players and trained with La Liga side Villarreal.A party of 20 players travelled to the club near Valencia to spend a few days at its new training complex and play a match against the Villarreal girls side.
They benefited from some top quality coaching and, although they lost heavily to their Spanish opponents, they enjoyed the experience of testing themselves against some tough opponents.
One of the school’s PE teachers Kate Honeysett said the party were well looked after by their hosts and enjoyed staying near the beach in Bennicasim.
To round off the trip, they got to meet some of the Villarreal players, who are second in the Spanish top flight, behind Real Madrid.
“We were training on fantastic facilities with the Villareal first team right next to us,” Kate said.
“Former Arsenal player Robert Pires came over and started talking to us and having photos taken.
He was very friendly and interested in our visit.
“The girls thoroughly enjoyed the visit and it is something we would like to consider again in the future.”
The trip was only possible because of the girls’ fund-raising activities. They organised cake sales and a sponsored five kilometre run to help towards the overall cost.
