THE young and old in Tower Hamlets got into the party spirit for a special celebration.

More than 80 of the borough's over 50s donned their glad rags to celebrate the occasion at The Brady Arts Centre.

The free tea party - organised by Tower Hamlets Council's Arts and Events Team - was hosted by DJ and dance leader Tony Lane.

Guests were treated to live music and songs from The Ladies Excuse Me Orchestra, while children from St Paul's with St Luke's Primary in Bow also entertained. They put on a dance performance and taught the older residents to salsa.

St George's Day Celebrations continued across the borough with students marking the day by tucking into traditional English grub offered in Tower Hamlets' schools. (23/04)

With serving areas and canteens decked out in St George's crosses, pupils took part in activities and quizzes based on England, with prizes up for grabs.

The themed-lunch was organised by Tower Hamlets Council's Children's Services Contract Services team.

They arrange regular themed-lunches throughout the year to enable Tower Hamlets children the chance to try new foods and learn about different cultures.

Residents also had the opportunity to join in free St George's Day celebrations at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. (26/04)

Organised by Tower Hamlets Council in partnership with the museum, the family fun day was expected to include traditional English folk dances and performances, giant dragon-making, and morris and maypole dancers.

Over 50s events are organised throughout the year. For details visit www.towerhamletsarts.org.uk or call the Brady Arts Centre on (020) 7364 7900.
